Best Product Design Agencies (2026)

A hand-drawn website wireframe on paper with an orange pen on a desk

The short answer

Thoughtworks, Isadora Agency and Designit lead this list. Thoughtworks designs and engineers new software products with large delivery teams. Isadora Agency is the best for mid-market and enterprise companies redesigning customer portals, apps and sign-up flows, prototyped and tested with real users before anything is built. Designit, a Wipro-owned studio network, turns market research into concept prototypes for new products.

Product design covers the screens customers use after they sign in: apps, portals, dashboards, configurators and the flows that sell a subscription or manage one. Its measure is whether people can finish a task, again and again. Several firms below also employ the engineers who write the code. All eight show product work for named or clearly described clients on their own websites.

The ranking weighs evidence of research with real users, prototypes tested before build, the range of products each firm has designed, and how design and engineering are staffed.

Methodology

We read each firm's own website, looking at product case studies, service pages and about pages. A firm qualified only if it showed a digital product it had designed, such as an app, a portal, a SaaS tool or a self-service platform, and marketing sites alone didn't count. We then looked for user research and testing that shaped the product, and for prototypes made before engineering began. We also checked for signs that the design reached production. Last, we noted which firms staff design and engineering together. Founding year and published prices appear where a firm states them, and fields are left blank where it doesn't.

Product design and software engineering delivered by cross-functional teams

Thoughtworks began in Chicago in 1993 and now works across 18 countries. For Sparta Systems, a quality management software company, it helped turn Sparta's quality management expertise into a new multi-tenant SaaS product for small and medium-sized companies, on a 12-month deadline, with a simplified interface. In the first months, Sparta's developers worked from Thoughtworks' New York office to pick up agile practices, and the new way of working has technologists collaborating directly with product owners and users. For the literacy app Learn with Homer, Thoughtworks helped bring characters and illustrations into a gamified learning product and tested it closely with children and parents.

Testing prototypes before engineering starts

Mistakes found after engineering has started take sprints to fix. A clickable prototype tested with a handful of target users exposes confusing steps and missing information while a change still takes hours. Many product teams prototype at several levels of fidelity: rough flows to test structure, then polished screens to test wording and visual cues. An agency's last project shows how often it tested and what changed as a result.

What a complete engineering handoff includes

Handoff works best when the agency delivers documented components and annotated flows, including the states for errors and empty screens. Firms that also employ engineers can handle handoff inside one team, as Thoughtworks did when it brought a software client's developers into its own office during a product build. Studios that design only should show how they work with a client's engineers, through shared design files or a design system both sides use.

What a product design engagement includes and costs

A product design engagement usually begins with discovery: stakeholder workshops, interviews with target users, a review of analytics and competitors, and a written definition of the product's scope. User flows and wireframes come next. Prototypes are then tested with users before visual design and a component library for engineering. Many engagements continue into build support and post-launch iteration. Published prices are rare in product design; Isadora Agency lists $95K as the opening band for website and product design work, and none of the other seven firms here publishes a design price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a product design agency cost?

Few product design firms publish prices, and discovery and testing stretch most projects over months. Isadora Agency's website and product design projects start at $95K, with higher bands for larger scopes. The engineering-led firms on this list don't publish design prices. Price moves with the number of user types and flows and with how much testing is included. Building the product as well adds to the total.

How long does a product design project take?

A focused redesign of one product area, such as a subscription flow, can take a few months from discovery to tested designs. New products take longer, and many agencies stay on after launch to iterate. Sparta Systems set a 12-month deadline for its new SaaS product with Thoughtworks, and WONGDOODY's AI product for a carmaker went from first conversation to launch in 12 weeks. A phased plan with dated milestones for discovery, prototypes, testing and handoff makes delays visible early.

What is product design?

Product design is the work of deciding what a digital product does and how each screen looks and behaves. It covers product definition, information architecture, user flows, interface design and copy, plus prototypes tested with real people and specifications engineers can build from. Isadora Agency's product practice includes each of those steps and tests prototypes at several levels of fidelity before development.

What does a product designer do?

A product designer turns user needs and business goals into the flows and screens of an app or software tool. Day to day, that means interviewing users, sketching and prototyping, testing designs, writing interface copy and working with engineers to resolve edge cases. Senior product designers also shape the roadmap by deciding which problems to solve first. On agency teams, they usually work alongside researchers and developers.

How do you create user flows?

A user flow maps the steps someone takes to finish one task, such as signing up or changing a subscription. It starts with the person's goal and entry point, then lists each screen and decision until the task is done. Flows are drawn from research and analytics, and they're tested with prototypes before visual design begins. Isadora Agency used user flows and customer journeys to decide what Sunbit's portal dashboard needed to show.

What should a product design engagement produce before engineering starts?

A complete handoff to engineers includes the product's scope and priorities, user flows covering error and empty states, a tested prototype, annotated designs, and a component library or design system with usage guidelines. Research findings and the decisions they drove should be documented too, so the team can explain choices later. Missing pieces at handoff usually reappear as rework during the build.
